Chief Executive Chris Hughes steps down after 25 Years with Switched On Group

Chris Hughes Chief Executive Switched On Group New Zealand

After 25 years of dedicated service — including
nearly 7 years at the helm — our Chief Executive, Chris Hughes, is stepping down from his role this week. His departure marks the end of a remarkable chapter of growth and transformation, led by Chris and the Hughes whānau, who founded Kā te Rama Switched On Group in 1983.

Reflecting on his journey, Chris shared:

“Switched On was founded the same year I was born, so in many ways, it’s always been a part of my world. From sweeping the yard and answering phones as a teenager to leading the Group as CE, I’ve had the absolute privilege of growing up alongside this company.”

Under Chris’s leadership, Switched On Group has evolved from a Christchurch-based, family-run maintenance business into a national construction and facilities management group. Key milestones during his tenure include the development and growth of Switched On Building Solutions; the acquisition of Hush Interiors; the strategic partnership with Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira (now majority shareholders); and the expansion of the Group’s maintenance partnership with Kāinga Ora into the North Island.

We’ve grown from a humble family business into a national organisation with purpose and scale. Since stepping into the CE role in 2018, I’ve loved shaping the strategy and future vision and watching us bring it to life. In that time, we’ve grown nearly tenfold — not just in size, but in maturity and in who we are,” Chris says.

Chris’s decision to step down comes at a time of personal reflection and organisational evolution.

“With the arrival of our fourth child, Louis, and Camille — my wife — stepping back from the business, I’ve had reason to pause and consider what matters most in my life. With all the momentum and milestones, there has also been a cost: missed family moments, cancelled holidays, and many, many years where work has always come first.

“Just before Christmas 2024, the Rūnanga acquired more shares, becoming majority shareholders. With that shift in ownership, the business is changing. It is with that lens and a renewed commitment to my family that I’ve made the decision to step out of the business. This decision is about honouring who I am, how I lead, and recognising when it’s time.

Succession, to me, is one of the greatest responsibilities of leadership. I believe real leadership is knowing when to hand things over with clarity, respect, and care. In that way, I’m doing the right thing for me, the business, and most importantly, all our people,” he says.

Board acknowledges the transition and legacy

Kā te Rama Switched On Group Board Chair, Paul Rogers, acknowledges the significance of this transition:

“This is a significant moment for Kā te Rama Switched On Group, and especially for Chris. His decision reflects his long-signalled intention to move on from his role and from our Group. It also aligns with key milestones such as an exciting acquisition opportunity and increased iwi shareholding, allowing fresh leadership to take the baton and continue working towards our Group’s aspirations.

“Our Group’s achievements reflect a bold and values-driven vision, brought to life by Chris’s leadership and the dedication of our kaimahi across Aotearoa. His legacy is not only in these milestones, but in the culture, values, and people that continue to drive our Group forward.”

The Board has appointed Chief Financial Officer Andrew Radburnd as Acting Chief Executive, a role he has successfully held in the past. The Group remains focused on its strategic priorities, including progressing a significant acquisition, enhancing leadership and wellbeing, and pursuing growth opportunities across Aotearoa.

The transition will be supported by a strong leadership team and a clear strategic direction. The Group is well-positioned to continue delivering for its customers, partners, and communities.
